For many years, patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) were told to avoid whole grains. This included foods like brown rice and whole-wheat bread, pasta, or crackers. Fortunately for carb-lovers, recommendations have changed and whole grains are now actually encouraged. Learn why experts have changed their tune, and how whole grains can benefit you even with CKD.

Is eating whole grains safe for all CKD patients?

If you have been told to avoid whole grains due to their high phosphorus content, you are being given outdated information. While whole grains contain high amounts of phosphorus compared to refined grains, research shows that phosphorus is poorly absorbed. Therefore, whole grains can be eaten during all stages of CKD, and even if you’re undergoing:

  • Hemodialysis (incenter, at home, or nocturnal)
  • Peritoneal dialysis
  • Organ transplant

Whole grains are also safe to eat if you have kidney stones.

What are the benefits of whole grains?

Not only are whole grains safe for CKD patients, but they are also beneficial. Unlike refined grains, whole grains include the bran (the edible outer layer) that offers fiber and antioxidants, and the germ (the inner part) that provides a variety of vitamins and minerals. Overall health benefits of whole grains include:

  • Help with bowel regularity
  • Blood pressure and blood sugar control
  • Improved cholesterol levels
  • A feeling of fullness that can help with weight management

Whole grains also have a long shelf life and are often expensive. Speak with a registered dietitian to learn how best to incorporate whole grains into your kidney-friendly diet plan.
