One particular well-known diet meets the National Kidney Foundation’s new nutrition guidelines to help manage CKD.
According to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), the right kidney-friendly diet will give you more energy, help prevent infection, and/or help stop the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). NKF’s most recent recommendations suggest that increasing fresh produce and decreasing red meat are the best all-around diet tweaks for people living with CKD. Learn more about the guidelines here.*
Since nutrition plays an important role in treating CKD, scientists have devoted a lot of time to learn the best diet approaches for patients. The NKF partners with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) to provide well-researched recommendations called the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) Clinical Practice Guidelines for Nutrition in CKD.
In 2020, the guidelines made a shift from simply limiting the consumption of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus to focusing on overall diet quality. According to the KDOQI guidelines, one of the best eating habits for CKD involves adding more plant-based foods and eating less red meat.
Finding ways to eat more vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts, and legumes may be the best way to manage your kidney health. If you like having some structure to guide your eating habits, and are interested in following a specific diet, the NKF recommends the DASH diet. Its approach includes many plant-based foods, still allows for poultry and fish as protein sources, and involves cutting back on red meat and added sugars.
