Many people enjoy holidays for family get-togethers, cooler weather, and comfort food. Unfortunately, finding healthy foods to eat can be challenging for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Registered dietitian Michele Cook provides five SMARTT ideas to help you manage your nutrition and CKD during the holiday season.*

S: Shop and Save

Reading your local grocery ads and preparing your grocery list of healthy items in advance can save you time, stress, and money. In general, shopping the perimeter of the grocery store will help you to choose the freshest and healthiest foods.

Calories from dessert can often be the highest but most satisfying. Consider trying this dessert cup from Davita.com for a healthier, low-potassium option in place of a frozen pie or heavier dessert choice.

M: Manage Your Meals

The holiday season can be busy and you may not feel you have time to prepare a healthy menu for a day, week, or month. There are many kidney-friendly cookbooks and websites to provide you with some ideas. Try searching and saving your favorite kidney-friendly recipes throughout the year.

If you are unsure whether a food item is kidney-friendly, you can use the Davita Food Analyzer tool. Tech-savvy patients may find meal planning easier with phone apps like Nutra Check or Cronometer, as well.

A: An Active and Balanced Mind

Taking time for self-care can help to make the holiday season less stressful. Stress can lead to a lack of sleep and poor food choices. Consider going for a walk, doing some stretches or yoga, or meditating each day to keep your mind calm.

R: Remember to Fit in Fitness

Making time for exercise is important during the holidays and all year round. Exercise can help optimize blood sugar management, improve blood pressure, and assist with weight management. Moreover, it can help you to be more aware of your body and encourage you to make healthier choices throughout the holidays.

TT: Talk it Through and Take Charge

For some of your family and friends, their own health and nutrition may not be a high priority around the holidays. Speaking with them about why healthy eating is important to you can help them understand how to best support you. Take charge of your health by initiating the conversation and bringing healthier options to a dinner party.

It’s easy to overindulge when you’re surrounded by rich foods. Unfortunately, these foods are often high in sugar, salt, and fat. While it is okay to enjoy less nutritious foods in small portions occasionally, try to maintain your healthy habits. These long-term habits are what will help you to succeed and manage your CKD well.
