Often known as the “quiet disease” because of the lack of symptoms, chronic kidney disease (CKD) can be missed in many patients until it becomes very advanced. Even with mild symptoms and signs, leaving kidney disease unaddressed will cause toxins to build up, which can be potentially deadly. Learn about three of the most common early warning signs of CKD and other less common symptoms that may indicate kidney disease.
1) Change in Urination – Changes in urine production are a tell-tale sign that something is off with your kidneys. Less urine, urinating more often, change in color or smell, foam, pain, or blood in urine can all indicate kidney disease.
2) Protein in Urine – If you have a family history of kidney disease, diabetes, or hypertension, it is recommended that you have an annual physical where a urine test may be done. Urine tests will check for blood cells or protein in the urine, which can mean kidney damage.
3) Lower Back Pain – While lower back pain is common, many kidney disease patients report back pain below the rib cage and even around the sides.
