With nearly half of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in the U.S. suffering from obesity, weight loss is often recommended by providers. Traditional weight loss methods can be difficult or ineffective, which is why many consider weight loss (bariatric) surgery. Learn more from Dr. Jaime Ponce, a bariatric surgeon, as he explains the benefits and safety concerns of bariatric surgery in CKD patients.*

CKD and Weight Loss

CKD disease affects more than 200,000 Americans every year. The link between CKD and obesity has led scientists to research potential treatments that can address both conditions.

Overcoming obesity can be challenging for anyone, but it can be even more difficult when living with chronic conditions such as CKD. Having the willpower to control one’s food items and portions is often complicated by mental, emotional, and genetic factors, along with time and money constraints. New treatments, including bariatric surgery, have evolved to help support weight loss.

What are the benefits?

Research has revealed benefits of weight loss from bariatric surgery in CKD patients, including:

  • Improved kidney function
  • Reducing and controlling blood pressure
  • Better management of diabetes
  • Helping patients qualify for a kidney transplant

While the benefits can be life-changing in a good way, many people may still wonder how safe the surgery is.

Is bariatric surgery safe?

Some common post-op risks of bariatric surgery include:

  • Acid reflux,
  • Infection,
  • Dilation of the esophagus,
  • Low blood sugar,
  • Ulcers and/or hernias,
  • Bowel obstruction,
  • Chronic nausea and vomiting, and
  • The inability to eat certain foods.

While every surgery comes with its set of risks, Ponce says, the benefits of bariatric surgery can outweigh the risks. After 20 years of improvements, he adds, the surgery is “now considered as safe as having an appendix removed.”
