With Halloween approaching, candy is everywhere. For people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), many sweets can be high in phosphorus, potassium, or sugar, which may affect bone and heart health or cause discomfort. However, with thoughtful choices, it’s possible to enjoy candy in moderation while maintaining a kidney-friendly diet.*

Kidney-Friendly Candy Options

Candies lower in phosphorus, potassium, and sodium are best choices for kidney health:

  • Hard candies: Sweetarts®, Jolly Ranchers®, LifeSavers®, lollipops
  • Chewy candies: gumdrops, red licorice, gummy bears or worms
  • Other options: candy corn, Red Hots®, Lemon Drops®
  • Sugar-free varieties for those managing diabetes

Candies to Limit

Some candies should be eaten sparingly:

  • Toffee and caramel treats
  • Chocolate bars, especially with nuts (e.g., Snickers®, Almond Joy®)
  • Chocolate-covered candies
  • Black licorice

Chocolate contains potassium and phosphorus—less in milk chocolate than dark. Black licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, which in large amounts can cause swelling, high blood pressure, and irregular heartbeat. Red licorice does not contain this compound.

Chocolate and the Kidney Diet

Chocolate can fit into a renal diet with moderation and portion control. To lower phosphorus and potassium:

  • Choose smaller pieces
  • Opt for white or milk chocolate over dark
  • Select bars with lighter fillings (like wafers)

Chocolate alternatives such as butterscotch are lower in phosphorus and potassium.

Candy Benefits

Hard or sour candies can help dialysis patients manage thirst and may provide extra calories for those needing more energy. Your nephrologist or renal dietitian can provide personalized guidance, empowering you to navigate your own CKD diet while enjoying your favorite treats responsibly.
