Between filtering blood, removing toxins, and producing hormones, your kidneys do a lot and are important to your health. When they become overworked, wastes and fluids build up and chronic kidney disease (CKD) may develop. Fortunately, healthy eating habits can help to preserve kidney function. Learn about 10 of the best foods to eat to promote kidney health.*

Fatty Fish

According to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may help to decrease fat levels (triglycerides) in the blood, and lower blood pressure. For advanced CKD patients who have more restrictions, NKF provides a chart of potassium and phosphorus content of common fish, which can assist you in choosing the most kidney-friendly fish.

Cabbage

Cabbage is a great option for all CKD patients. It is packed with kidney-friendly vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Plus, it is versatile and can be used in salads, slaws, wraps, sandwiches, and more.

Bell peppers

At every stage of CKD, you can enjoy bell peppers raw with a dip or cooked with some fajitas or curry. They are packed with vitamins B6, B9, C, and K. Plus, they provide fiber and antioxidants, while being low in potassium, sodium, and phosphorus.

Cranberries

Whether enjoyed whole, juiced, or in a sauce, cranberries can help to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). At times, UTIs can travel up to your kidney and make CKD worse. Regular consumption of cranberries can help protect those prone to UTIs.

Blueberries

With high levels of antioxidants and fiber, blueberries are an all-around healthy option for CKD patients. They can also help to decrease inflammation and support bone-health. Inflammation and brittle bones are common issues in CKD.

Dark, leafy greens

Dark, leafy greens like spinach and kale pack many different types of nutrients and will help to support your immune system. If following a low-potassium diet, be aware of the leafy greens with higher amounts and try to stick with ones that may provide less potassium.

Olive oil

Instead of flavoring your dish with salt and butter, try using olive oil. Being rich in antioxidants and healthy fatty acids, olive oil can help to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, and some types of cancer.

Garlic

Another way to add flavor and healthy nutrients to a dish is by adding garlic. Garlic contains an active compound called allicin that some studies say may help to protect your kidneys.

Onions

From the same family as garlic, onion can also add flavor to your food while providing healthy nutrients. Onions contain quercetin, a chemical that may help your body fight cancer, and other compounds that reduce the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.

Apples

Apples are an easy grab-and-go snack for CKD patients. Apples deliver cancer-fighting quercetin and fiber to help support healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
